My Story
An art historian with a passion for architecture, art, and design from the second half of the 20th century, and a politician between 2005 and 2019, Sophie François began painting in September 2019. “I would never have allowed myself to paint if I hadn’t been confronted with the aging of furniture that I wanted to keep. I wanted to turn the crib from my childhood, which had become that of my children and grandchildren, into a silver and black-and-white object-painting that could be passed on. My experience with the brush is therefore directly linked to that of volume, each side of which reveals a surprise.
The use of blocks of multiple dimensions, combining with each other as desired, multiplying the interplay of lines, edges, and colors, then came naturally, without precluding flat formats, boards, canvases, and ceramics. Each painting is a module that can be displayed freely, horizontally or vertically, most often placed or hung, isolated or combined with others, in the form of temporary or permanent installations, unless it is designed specifically for a particular location.

« Jamais je ne me serais autorisée à peindre si je n’avais été confrontée au vieillissement de meubles que je souhaitais conserver. Je voulais transformer le lit à barreaux de mon enfance, devenu celui de mes enfants et petits-enfants, en une œuvre-peinture argentée et en noir et blanc, transmissible de génération en génération. Mon rapport au pinceau est donc indissociable de celui du volume, dont chaque face révèle une surprise. L’utilisation de blocs de dimensions multiples, combinables à volonté, multipliant le jeu des lignes, des contours et des couleurs, s’est alors imposée naturellement, sans pour autant exclure les supports plats, panneaux, toiles et céramiques. Chaque tableau est un module qui peut être exposé librement, à l’horizontale ou à la verticale, le plus souvent posé ou accroché, isolé ou combiné à d’autres, sous forme d’installations temporaires ou permanentes, à moins d’être conçu spécifiquement pour un lieu particulier. »
